I'm really excited about this (since it fixes a few bugs that have had an impact on me). Find out more at www.dotnetblogengine.net/ Now that 1.1 has been released, I'm going to be actively looking at theme creation; I've got mine, of course, but I've got some ideas for others as well.

A spaceship explodes in space, with one of two components to blame - Part 1

  • July 14, 2007

A space ship launches, and while in space, it explodes. Let us assume we can see all possible reasons it could have exploded, and we find that there is an equal chance for one of two components to fail, which therefore would have caused the explosion. In either case, the end result would have been the same, down to the smallest particle. In other words, not even a god could discern any difference between the conclusion of the explosion; everything is exactly in the same place in either case.

BlogEngine.NET Theme - StrivingLife (almost done)

  • July 14, 2007
  • James Skemp
I've almost completed converting the WordPress theme to a BlogEngine.NET theme. The only hard part is when BlogEngine.NET (or ASP.NET) restricts write access to the CSS file. In these cases I have to tweak the CSS file using Firebug. It's a bit of a chore, since BlogEngine.NET compresses the CSS file so much (which is a good thing, in the long term), but since I'm also changing the file locally in Dreamweaver, it's just a matter of copying and pasting (over the Firebug CSS content).

BlogEngine.NET - now used by StrivingLife

With a new host, comes a unique move. Previously I was using WordPress, since I was hosted on a Linux (shared) server. Fortunately, I've decided to move to a Windows VPS, since the month of June was full of either slow down, or completely down, times. Since I don't want to install PHP and MySQL (which I would want to pay for the external dbs anyway), I've decided to switch my content out of WordPress.

[Personal] New glasses

  • July 12, 2007
  • James Skemp
After a good number of years, I've finally got new glasses ... I don't know how long I've had my previous frames, but I believe I put two different lenses into them. Part of the reason is I don't care too much about my glasses - I just want glasses that work. So, I went to Lenscrafters and worked with Candace (sp?), and with some assistance from my sister, I picked up two pairs; one pair of regular, and one pair of sunglasses.

Philosophical thoughts - 7/10/2007

  • July 11, 2007
  • James Skemp
The following thoughts are from approximately 10:20 last night. While I'd like to believe that technology is good, part of me believes the opposite. So close are they, in fact, that I can make no decision one way or another, try as I might. While it's true science can heal us, all too often life itself is placed above the reason for life - the reason to live. True, we will soon be living longer and longer, but at what price?

An interesting monologue overheard - July 8, 2007

  • July 10, 2007

This weekend we went down to the Capitol for Madison's farmer's market on the square. While walking towards the square (the streets surrounding the Capitol building) I overheard a glimpse of a man's speech. While I only heard part of, and I have no idea what was going on before or after the conversation, it sounded quite like a monologue. The gist of his speech was that there's a fight to give illegal immigrants legal status in America.

Quick review: Parasite Dolls (2004)

  • July 6, 2007

With over 6 hours left of instant watching time left, all that needs to be used before the 10th of the month, it was time for another movie ... This time it was the 2004 film Parasite Dolls. I knew nothing of the film before I watched it. In this anime adventure, androids with knock-out bodies and personalities have begun to take over every area of society. Known as Boomers, these stellar-looking beings begin to show that some are as un-human as you can get, and when their infiltration becomes too much to take, peacekeeper Branch must step in to make things right.

Quick review: Dominion Tank Police (1989)

  • July 5, 2007
  • James Skemp
I watched Dominion Tank Police this evening, from Netflix. It's four acts, each consisting of about 35 to 40 minutes of movie (which includes approximately 1 1/2 minutes of opening and ending credits. What really attracted me to the movie was Masamune Shirow, who created not only this series, but also Appleseed (the newer one is more interesting than the original), Black Magic M-66 (which I haven't yet seen) and Ghost in the Shell (great movies and interesting shows).
