What if gas cost $10 a gallon?

Shirley Skeel wrote an interesting article on MSN Money titled "What if gas cost $10 a gallon?" All-in-all, pretty interesting article. I don't know about anyone else, but I've been doing what I can to save money (ignoring the fact that I bought another monitor the other day), including using more energy efficient light bulbs in all of my sockets. But I wish my gas mileage was a bit better .

Jeff Atwood's post on MVC brings up a great philosophical question ...

  • May 14, 2008
  • James Skemp
I forgot to comment on this the other day, when I first read the post. Jeff Atwood, of Coding Horror, wrote a piece titled "Understanding Model-View-Controller" which brought forth this response from Shmork (I wish he would have posted a site): I have to admit, as someone with more philosophical inclinations, I wonder whether the stated goal of totally separating content from representation is even a good idea. Certainly no graphic designer would sign on to that theory of the world, much less a philosophically inclined graphic designer.

Keyboard shortcuts for Visual Studio that mimic Dreamweaver

  • May 14, 2008
  • James Skemp
I like Dreamweaver. After Notepad, and various other apps like it, I used FrontPage, was scarred, and was saved by Dreamweaver. However, Dreamweaver can't handle .NET files very well. So when I moved to Windows and started using BlogEngine.NET I naturally started looking at how I could edit the source files. Visual Web Developer 2005 had been released, so ... Skipping forward, I'm starting to work with Visual Studio more and more.

Subway makes the $5 footlongs a part of their menu - what a surprise

  • May 13, 2008

According to commercials yesterday and today, the $5 footlongs at Subway are now a part of the menu. Is anyone really surprised? While the Subway near where I work is usually very busy during lunch, it seems to be especially so now. This is after they raised the prices of their subs not once, but twice. On that note, what's up with The Feast? Seriously.

Regular Expression tester - ASP.NET

  • May 4, 2008

I've posted code in ColdFusion and JavaScript for a regular expression tester. Since I'm looking at ASP.NET development ... here's one built on ASP.NET (3.5, but it should run fine on 2.0), in C#. Review: The World as Will and Presentation, Volume One

  • May 4, 2008
  • James Skemp
The following book review is for the Richard E. Aquila translation of Arthur Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Presentation, Volume One. A brief history of my previous experiences with Schopenhauer: I first read Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation (the Payne, definitive, translation) many years ago. I've also read a number of Schopenhauer's other works (mostly done by Payne) and have tried to pick up as many other works of his as I can.

Ever since I was told about Grisoft AVG, way back when, I've been a heavy user. 8.0 recently came out, but a free version wasn't available. However, I was notified today that a free version of 8.0 is now available. Go get it.   Updated May 4, 2008: Updated the link. They've made it very difficult to get from the Grisoft home page to the free version's download page ...

Errata for The World As Will and Presentation Volume One

  • April 29, 2008
  • James Skemp
Hello,  I noticed a very minor mistake in Volume One of The World As Will and Presentation, translated by Richard E. Aquila. I'm of the tech-industry now, where errata is a necessary evil, so ... I thought I'd point it out, just in case any other fixes need be made in later printings/editions.  On page 396, in the last sentence of the first full paragraph, we have this text: "Someone who is carried off as a captive by brigands, e.

M.C. Escher comes to the Playstation (demo)

  • April 25, 2008
  • James Skemp
After all the hype, I finally had the chance to actually play a demo of echochrome, the M.C. Escher-ish game that's coming out for the Playstation 3 and PSP. The first Google result, for a YouTube video, gives an excellent presentation of what the game is like. However, at least in the demo, the camera controls seem sluggish. Perhaps the Sixaxis motion control would make this easier - I haven't tried it yet.
