And so begins year three with Netflix. I covered year one and year two, of what was shipped to me, when, and when I shipped them back, previously. Since last year got a bit long, I'm going to break it up a bit. So, this post covers shipping from September 26, 2008, to about halfway through (I'm not there yet, so ...). Plan changes On 12/10/2008 I moved from the two-unlimited to the one-unlimited plan.

LittleBigPlanet - New site and available for pre-order

  • August 7, 2008

Got a notice of http://littlebigplanet.us.playstation.com/ in my Gmail account a few moments ago. I was unaware that LittleBigPlanet was already available for pre-order. I looked at Amazon, but, quite frankly, I want it rather quickly. BestBuy.com doesn't have it listed, but Gamestop.com does, so ... my first online purchase through that site. Store pick-up selected, of course. What I don't care for is that there will supposedly be different items available for pre-ordering, depending upon where you do so.

Thoughts on PixelJunk Eden

  • August 1, 2008

This morning Charter fixed whatever issues they were having, so I was able to purchase and download the full version of PixelJunk Eden. I played 30 minutes this morning, and many hours this afternoon/evening. (When I shut down for the last time, my rank was 1013 - I'm sure it's already changed though.)  As the demo suggested, this game is the closest thing to a masterpiece I've seen in a very long time.

Review: Apache JMeter

  • July 24, 2008

The following is a book review of Apache JMeter, written by Emily H. Halili. First off, my experience with automated software/application testing is extremely limited. For the most part any testing I've done has been manual testing. Recently, however, I was introduced to, and began using, Microsoft's Web Application Stress Tool. Because of this level of experience, Emily Halili's Apache JMeter was the perfect book for me, as it contains an analysis of automated testing (including when best to do it, versus manual testing), in addition to the introduction to Apache JMeter.

The following is errata for Apache JMeter, by Emily H. Halili, and has been submitted to Packt Publishing. Read my review.  Page 4, 2nd to last sentence: 'downlad' should be 'download' Page 13, last sentence: "You *too can* contribute." Page 39, 1st paragraph, last sentence: "as *a* failed request." Page 42, 1st paragraph, last sentence: "retrieve *a* particular value" Page 48, last list item: display shows "KB/sec" but the list item is "Kb/sec" Page 48: Is the mean time in ms?

Review: HP GL313AA#ABA 2-piece USB Speakers

  • July 12, 2008

The following is a review for HP Multimedia Speakers, specifically HP GL313AA#ABA 2-piece USB Speakers. I don't play PC games any more, and I watch (most) movies on my nice television. So, what I really wanted from these little speakers was to be able to listen to iTunes every once in a while, and watch assorted videos online (YouTube, Video.Google, and even Netflix every once in a while). These speakers are perfect for exactly that.

Review: Tamrac 3582 Express Case 2

  • July 12, 2008

I purchased one of these cases (Tamrac 3582 Express Case 2) for a Casio Exilim (EX-Z1200) that I purchased at the same time. That camera fits this case *perfectly*, so my review may be a bit biased because of that :) In my opinion, this is a great little case. The padding provided is just the right amount that, the one time I dropped my camera, my heart didn't sink. (No surprise, the camera was fine.

Review: Professional ASP.NET 3.5 In C# and VB

  • July 11, 2008

The following is a book review of Professional ASP.NET 3.5 In C# and VB, written by Bill Evjen, Scott Hanselman, and Devin Rader. Having read Imar Spaanjaar's Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 In C# and VB (review), I was expecting a number of good things from this book. Imar's book is really great in that he shows you how to build a Web application with ASP.NET 3.5. However, with Professional ASP.NET 3.5 In C# and VB, you instead get 1500+ page reference book.

I never heard from them on my last batch of feedback for the Professional version, and they still aren't posted, but Imar confirmed the one errata I pointed out on his book. Additional errata for Professional ASP.NET 3.5 In C# and VB: Page 579, last sentence: Welcome.html should be Welcome.htm Page 581, first paragraph: Welcome.html should be Welcome.htm (x2) and Start.html should be Start.htm Page 628: Figure 13-1 is the incorrect image.

BlogEngine.NET 1.4 - Memory usage spike?

  • July 6, 2008
  • James Skemp
Update, July 9, 2008: This update is a little late, but ... Mads was able to determine what the issue was and has provided a fix. I'll be trying another update this week. I recently upgraded to BlogEngine.NET 1.4, from 1.3. While it was, overall, a smooth enough process, while trying to dig into the large memory usage spike, I ran into a number of issues. I've written about BlogEngine.NET in the past, and overall I've been very happy with it.
