New Log Parser Plus Web site design

  • May 22, 2011

My Web site on Microsoft Log Parser gets a fair amount of monthly traffic, but I've never really been happy with the design, which has been in place since I created the site back in September of 2008. While I was fully intending on updating the site last week (as well as doing a slew of other productive things), I finally did so this morning. Design 1 Design 2 Overall, I'd say that's a positive change, for a non-designer such as myself.

Review: Nier (2010) (Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3)

  • May 21, 2011

The following is a review of Nier (2010), available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Yes, the main character is ugly, but the story is anything but Nier, released in 2010, and developed by Cavia, gained mediocre reviews when it was released. The one thing I remember most about those reviews is the common statement that the main character in Nier was rather ugly. Of course, he (named whatever you name him) is rather ugly.

The following is a review of JavaScript: The Good Parts, written by Douglas Crockford. Focused discussion on the parts of JavaScript to learn more about At the beginning of last month Scott Hanselman had a Hanselminutes episode titled "JavaScript and jQuery: Moving beyond Alert()." During this episode he spoke with two JavaScript ... (experts? gurus?) users, and this book was mentioned as one to read if you wanted to get a better understanding of JavaScript.

The following is a review of 30-Minute Mandalas Coloring Book: Active Meditation for the Mind and Body OR Easy Meditation through Coloring. I'll be honest, I might be missing the point of these If, after reading my review's title, you haven't already decided to hit the 'No' button next to 'Was this review helpful to you' and otherwise ignore my review, thank you. I'll be the first to admit that I might not understand the point of these.

DD-WRT and my Linksys WRT54GL

  • April 23, 2011

I've been sitting on a Linksys (Cisco) WRT54GL for a long while now. A long, long, while. Originally I was going to replace my WRT54G (don't get me wrong, it still works great) and install DD-WRT for the additional features. However, I just never got around to it. Today I finally dusted off the box (I had opened it) and started getting it setup. Interestingly, the deeper I dug into DD-WRT the more confused I became.

Review: Ys Seven (PSP)

The following is a review of Ys Seven, for the Sony PlayStation Portable. Ys Seven, the first Ys game I've played, was recommended to me a number of times before I finally picked up a copy. Since XSEED had some hand in the game, I was expecting a fairly good game, and found an excellent one. Ys Seven is a sort of action RPG, with combat taking place on the field, and consisting of standard attacks, dodges, skills, and special attacks.

Review: C# in Depth, Second Edition

The following is a review of C# in Depth, Second Edition, written by Jon Skeet. I've been working in C# (heavily towards Web usage via ASP.NET) for almost a handful of years now, with the various Wrox books, and online materials, serving me rather well. However, I never really dug 'deep' into C#, and knew that there was a great deal of functionality I just wasn't using. This book, C# in Depth, comes up a lot during discussions of really understanding C#, or the man (legend?

What I've never understood about Conservatives

  • April 16, 2011
  • James Skemp
I've never understood how conservatives can be anti-government, but also be for government intervention in regards to abortion, prostitution, gay/lesbian marriage/civil unions, video and movie ratings, marijuana, and etcetera. Of course liberals aren't necessarily pushing hard for some of these, but see a benefit to government that doesn't include making the above illegal (and enforcing those laws) and building up the miltary. Maybe it's the fact that some people are for legalizing and then taxing some of those items, and they're anti-new taxes?

Review: The Master Switch

  • April 4, 2011

The following is a review of The Master Switch, by Tim Wu. A long while back I had first read mention of this book on a blog I subscribed to, the author of whom writes about technology. He briefly mentioned the book before going on to some related discussion. And that's about all I remember. He praised the book, but I can't recall why. Having now finished the book, I can honestly give it some praise as well, but I fear a repeat of what's happened in the past.

How to easily clear the window.applicationCache on select browsers

  • April 2, 2011
  • James Skemp
While I was working on tweaking my video game listing, and creating my offline Web application manager, I kept running into issues with the cache manifest holding onto data much longer than I would have liked. After some research I found that Chrome's interface can easily be found by going to chrome://appcache-internals/. On Safari, on the iPod Touch and iPad, you can stop/close Safari (hold down the home button on the home screen, and close the application) and then start it back up to clear the data.
