Review: jQuery Mobile by Jon Reid

The following is a review of jQuery Mobile, written by Jon Reid. A great introduction to jQuery Mobile development While jQuery Mobile has not yet had a final release, a number of alphas, and most recently a beta, have been released. When a new technology or framework is released it's sometimes difficult to determine when the best time is to start learning about it. Generally I try to stay away until a final version is released, but since this project is tied to jQuery, I can only assume that good things will come from this framework.

jQuery Mobile version of my video game listing

I picked up an electronic copy of jQuery Mobile by Jon Reid a little while ago and have been slowly making my way through it. I've finally gotten to the point where I wanted to try creating a jQuery Mobile version of my video game listing. View the jQuery Mobile version of my video games listing. In addition to jQuery Mobile, this also uses oXygen XML Editor, for taking the original XML source and transforming it via an XSLT 2.

My favorite Final Fantasy mini-game

  • July 6, 2011

I've had Final Fantasy VIII for many years, but have never finished it. In fact, I've never gotten through the first disc. However, having recently started it up once again, after picking up an electronic copy on the PSN (I still have the original, but this is the only legit way to play it on my PSP), I have to say that Final Fantasy VIII contains my favorite mini-game of the series, and perhaps one of my top favorites of all.

Internet Explorer 10: Platform Preview 2 now available

  • June 29, 2011

Released earlier today, Internet Explorer 10: Platform Preview 2 is now available for download. Just the other day at work I had fired up IE10PP1 to see if a new version was available, so I'll just go ahead and assume Microsoft was zeroing in on my brainwaves with this. I definitely like the direction they've gone with these platform previews, so I hope to see that continue. And that's about all I have to say about that.

mvc-mini-profiler for users in a particular role

  • June 24, 2011

When Jeff Atwood announced the release of the mvc-mini-profiler for ASP.NET MVC Web sites I was intrigued. Just the other day he wrote an article Performance is a Feature and I decided I could hold off no longer. Tonight (for better or worse) I finally got this up and running on one of my sites, and fully intend on adding it to at least one more. To install it I naturally used NuGet, but note that it's called MiniProfiler there.

On Web sites that feature Facebook Comments

  • June 24, 2011
  • James Skemp
Over the past few months a number of sites have switched over to Facebook-powered comments. For the most part those sites are ones that I've never commented one, nor will comment on. However, I recently discovered that a former co-worker, Rob Lumley, switched his site over to Facebook, and recently wrote an article about it titled Add Facebook Comments to WordPress. Since I don't use Facebook comments, I figured I'd post the response I had written and tried to post anonymously, here instead.

Review: Dante's Inferno (2010) (Xbox 360/PlayStation 3)

  • June 9, 2011

The following is a review of Dante's Inferno (2010), available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Enjoyable, but quick, with some annoying platforming As I continue playing games that received less than critical acclaim, I found myself playing Dante's Inferno for the Xbox 360. Dante's Inferno tells the story of Dante who journeys through Hell to save his beloved Beatrice. As we progress through the story we learn more about Dante himself, and why it is that he doesn't seem so out of place in this land.

Log Parser Plus June/July 2011 plans

  • June 2, 2011
  • James Skemp
Somehow, while I wasn't looking, the Log Parser Plus Web site has grown to what I consider a nice size over the last handful of months. As the Log Parser Plus Web site moves towards 2000 visits a month I'll be making a number of changes in an attempt to make it even more useful. Some changes I've already made: Implemented a new design. Added login functionality. Added ELMAH support. (Administrative) My current plan with item number 2 is to potentially tie in OpenID functionality so that individuals can easily submit their own examples.

Review: Darksiders (2009) (Xbox 360/PlayStation 3)

The following is a review of Darksiders (2009), available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Darksiders, like Nier, the last game I played through and beat, didn't get all that much respect when it first came out. But Darksiders features more than just God of War meets Zelda gameplay, it tells a story worth seeing through until the end. The following review is based upon a playthrough on the Xbox 360, on the hardest - Apocalyptic - difficulty.

The following is a review of JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, Sixth Edition, written by David Flanagan. Also available on O'Reilly Media. Provides a deep dive into JavaScript development JavaScript: The Definitive Guide is not just a complete reference of the language, like O'Reilly's other 'thick books,' but also provides a deep dive into JavaScript development. However, if you're just starting out and will be using one of the various libraries (like jQuery), this book may not (yet) be for you.
