The following is a review of Getting Start with Paint.NET (2013), written by Andros T. Sturgeon and Shoban Kumar, and published by Packt Publishing. Excellent primer for your average user In the past I've used Adobe Photoshop for my own personal use, as well as at work for relatively simple work. However, after losing my discount a number of years ago, I've kept my eye open for good alternatives, especially for those that were asking for my recommendation on software.

The following is a review of Ghost Trick, released in 2011, for the Nintendo DS. What a very good game A very short while ago I watched a video that featured Ghost Trick briefly, and I fell in love with the graphic style of the game. After ordering it with some other DS games, for use on my 3DS XL, I decided that it would be the first of the batch that I would play, and therefore also one of the first games I had played on the system in months.

Review: Panavise PortaGrip Phone Holder with Windshield Mount

The following is a review of the Panavise PortaGrip Phone Holder with Windshield Mount, which I received as part of the Amazon Vine program. No suction due to cold, but great grip Right away let me say that I wanted to like this product. Unfortunately, a lack of suction made it impossible for me to fully test this in my car. However, given the weather in Wisconsin, I fully attribute that to the extremely cold weather.

Goodbye, Pearl

This is sad, and something that I had to write. You can probably skip it. Around 2 a.m. this morning I put my cat down. I'm glad I never changed her name when I got her as it let me give her the nickname of 'pretty girl Pearl,' and I always smiled a little when I said it ("I'm a poet and I didn't even know it"). It was peaceful, and I hope that one day, when I get sick and/or just plain old, that I'll be able to go as peacefully.

Review: PlayStation 3 EX-02 Next Gen Bluetooth Headset with Faceplates

The following is a review of the PlayStation 3 EX-02 Next Gen Bluetooth Headset with Faceplates, which I received as part of the Amazon Vine program. External speaker is key I've tried two different microphones before this headset: the one that came with Warhawk and the PlayStation 3 camera, and since I rarely play multiplayer games, and PlayStation players are less likely to have microphones that Xbox 360 players, both were just fine.

Review: Rolodex Mesh Mobile Device Tablet Stand

The following is a review of the Rolodex Mesh Mobile Device Tablet Stand, which I received as part of the Amazon Vine program. Perfect with my Nexus 7 I currently have a Nexus 7 with a case that allows a certain level of tilting. However, since the case is relatively soft, it doesn't work as well as I'd like. I was also looking at purchasing a larger tablet over the holiday season, so when I saw this up for review I jumped at the opportunity.

Review: Contrast (2013)

The following is a review of Contrast, released in 2013, for the PlayStation 4. Charming Since Watch Dogs was delayed, I've been thinking about what game would be my first PlayStation 4 experience. Between Contrast, Flower, and Resogun, I ultimately decided upon Contrast, since while I had played flOw first on my PlayStation 3, I had already played (and enjoyed) Flower on the PS3, and wanted something slightly different.

Rough guide on manually setting up Git on Windows

  • October 6, 2013
  • James Skemp
For both machines I'm doing this on (running Windows 7 and Windows 8) I had already installed Github for Windows. However, since I've been converted to posh-git, I wanted to do an install that would get me away from continuing to use it. The below is roughly what I did, and may not be completely correct. Install the latest version of msysgit (currently 1.8.4). Set execution policy (run as administrator).Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned Install posh-git(new-object Net.

This is a rough list, in no particular order (yet), but here's the commands I've found useful after being converted to posh-git after my Google+ post. git add -u Add all changes (including deletions) git rm <file> Stage file deletion. git commit -m "Message" Commit with Message. git push Push to GitHub git status See what has changed/etcetera git pull Pull from GitHub git add <tab> <tab> Add multiple files, space delimited git diff <file> Difference.

Goodbye BlogEngine.NET

  • September 22, 2013
  • James Skemp
On July 13, 2007 I converted my blog over from WordPress to BlogEngine.NET (having previously used custom code written in PHP). It was a great switch, as I was beginning to really dig into .NET, and I've found there's no better way to learn something than actually doing something with it. While I don't think I did much with the beta, I was in on 1.0 and was fairly active at first.
