Initial thoughts on Playstation 3 instant streaming

  • November 6, 2009

Today I received my instant streaming disc for the Playstation 3 from Netflix. Having now moved around and watched a video, here are my thoughts. Note that I've watched Netflix streaming videos on my PC as well as on my Xbox 360. Thoughts As noted, currently the streaming capabilities require a disc. While this could perhaps be a download (and will be in the future), I don't believe it's too terrible that it requires a disc.

Review: Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0

  • October 18, 2009
  • James Skemp
The following is a review of Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0, written by Rob Conery, Scott Hanselman, Phil Haack, and Scott Guthrie. I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from Amazon Vine, but was planning on purchasing the book nonetheless (I just had the good fortune to get a copy before they were all taken). A great introduction to ASP.NET MVC Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 was my first real look at ASP.

Review: Muramasa: The Demon Blade

  • October 17, 2009
  • James Skemp
The following is a review of [Muramasa: The Demon Blade][review], for the Nintendo Wii. Let's get it out of the way; Muramasa: The Demon Blade is the game that finally made my purchase of the Wii worthwhile. Muramasa is in some ways similar to Super Metroid in that you progress around the game by moving from screen to screen, with enemy battles occuring randomly, as you move towards the act's boss.

Review: Girl in the Arena

  • August 7, 2009

The following is a book review of Girl in the Arena, written by Lise Haines. The book read was an uncorrected advance proof, and was selected by myself as part of my Amazon Vine 'membership.' This book is scheduled to be released in October 2009. The short version is that I give this book four of five stars. It's a good book, that I may read again, but it's not exactly what I was expecting, based upon the suggestion that fans of Fight Club (the novel) would enjoy this.

Thoughts on Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead: Part 4

  • May 27, 2009

The following article will contain spoilers of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. If you wish to read the book without my bias, do so before reading this article. As with the previous parts, it seems that Ayn Rand has written the final part of The Fountainhead with two people as the focus of the part. Howard Roark is associated with this part, but Gail Wynand is obviously the secondary character. Yet, Ellsworth's speech to Keating, which gives us a glimpse into what Ayn Rand fears, clarifies his character for us.

Thoughts on Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead: Part 3

The following article will contain spoilers of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. If you wish to read the book without my bias, do so before reading this article. Having finished Part 3 of The Fountainhead in less than a day, the whole should be fairly fresh in my memory. Yet, I have a hard time putting a second name to this part, to go along with Gail Wynand's, and as I did for my thoughts on part 2.

Thoughts on Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead: Part 2

In part 1 of this series I wrote about the first part of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. Having now finished part 2, I can write on it. The following will contain spoilers. I highly recommend you do not continue if you wish to read The Fountainhead with fresh eyes. The second part of The Fountainhead is devoted to Ellsworth M. Toohey, as the subtitle suggests. This further introduces a character we had met in part one, but gives us the chance to get to know him further.

Thoughts on Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead: Part 1

I've known of Ayn Rand for quite a number of years. The first time I can remember her being talked about was by a fellow philosophy student, approximately one year ahead of me, who was a rather big fan of her work. At least one professor got into arguments with this student, as she'd bring up Rand's approach. In 2002 and 2003 I read We the Living and Anthem, and enjoyed them well enough.

Review: America: The Last Best Hope: Volume II

  • April 2, 2009
  • James Skemp
The following is a book review of America: The Last Best Hope: Volume II, written by William J. Bennett. Taking a very short break to read some fiction, I moved from the first volume of William J. Bennett's America: The Last Best Hope, to the second volume. After reading the first I was looking forward to the second volume. I was hoping that the minor issues that I began noticing near the end of the first, would not be issues in the second.
