On the Saying "I can't wait"

  • September 12, 2009

I would be willing to bet that at least 90% of the time when someone uses the phrase "I can't wait" they're lying. What made me realize this is when I read a comment the other day regarding a video game's review. In this comment the individual had basically stated that they couldn't wait for the game. At the time of their comment, however, the game was already in stores and available for purchase.

Parsing Last.fm Web Services' artist.getSimilar with C# and LINQ to XML

  • September 12, 2009
  • James Skemp
The following covers how to parse the XML response of artist.getSimilar, from Last.fm's Web Services. Setup and assumptions The first step is sign up for a free API account at Last.fm. You'll also need to target .NET Framework 3.5 when you setup your project, so as to access LINQ functionality. When writing the steps listed below, I was working on a Windows Forms Application, but the steps should be the same, or very similar, for other project types.

Finding the list of files Dreamweaver will reopen on startup

  • August 19, 2009
  • James Skemp
As sometimes happens, a network share ended up going down while I was using Dreamweaver. Unfortunately, this can cause fairly major issues with Dreamweaver, if you have files still open, or if you have Dreamweaver closed, but need to open it up. Since I typically have more than one file open in Dreamweaver, and have set my preferences to remember what I've got open, I wanted to know where Dreamweaver stored the files that it was going to re-open.

Thoughts on objects and their underlying structure

Image for a moment two sheets of paper. On the first we have a design of a Web page. On the second we have the code (all of it) needed to generate that page. If we were to overlap the sheets of paper, so that the design covered the code, let us imagine that the overlapping sheet's background would turn transparent. With this in mind, we could overlap the two sheets of paper equally, with the right side of the design's sheet overlapping the left side of the code's sheet.

Review: Girl in the Arena

  • August 7, 2009
  • James Skemp
The following is a book review of Girl in the Arena, written by Lise Haines. The book read was an uncorrected advance proof, and was selected by myself as part of my Amazon Vine 'membership.' This book is scheduled to be released in October 2009. The short version is that I give this book four of five stars. It's a good book, that I may read again, but it's not exactly what I was expecting, based upon the suggestion that fans of Fight Club (the novel) would enjoy this.

This application has since been updated. Read about the current version of iTunes Playlists to Xml. Version 1.4 of iTunes Playlists to Xml is now available for download. Download iTunes Playlists to Xml 1.4. What it does While iTunes has an Xml export option, it will export only those tracks from your computer, doesn't allow you to choose what data to export (unless you play with the view), uses a bulky Xml format, and won't export from other sources (like iPods).

New site theme - watercircles

  • July 21, 2009
  • James Skemp
Based on metamorph_watercircles, and converted for use with BlogEngine.NET, watercircles is now in use on my site. The theme has a deal of special inline modifications for my own particular purposes, so it's not generally available for BlogEngine.NET users, but if you're interested ... Comments welcome. (I'm sure I'll find things I missed as the weeks go by, but any findings are appreciated.)

Know every version of iTunes installed on your machine? I do.

  • July 19, 2009
  • James Skemp
I've installed the following versions of iTunes on my machine: 7.0.2.16 7.1.1.5 7.2.0.35 7.3.1.3 7.5.0.20 7.6.2.9 8.0.2.20 Know how I know that? It seems that all Apple software on Windows (iTunes, QuickTime, and Safari, at least) leaves their traces in the following directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\ 313 MB of space is what I would recover if I deleted all the folders they created. Yikes.
